“If you’re OK, they’re OK”. A diabetes diagnosis can be overwhelming for you, the parents and carers of children. It is normal to feel a mix of emotions, including shock, worry, sadness, and even guilt. However, it is important to remember that diabetes is not caused by anything you did or did not do, there is no blame to be placed.

Most parents know little about diabetes before their child’s diagnosis, but with the right support, you will gain confidence in navigating life with diabetes. Your child’s healthcare team is there to guide you, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek help.

Looking After Yourself as a Parent

Caring for a child with diabetes can feel overwhelming and all consuming, but your well-being matters too. When you take care of yourself, you are in a better position to support your child.

Prioritising Your Well-Being

  • Get enough sleep – diabetes management can lead to disrupted nights, but where possible, share responsibilities with a partner or other support network. If nighttime highs or lows are frequent, consult your healthcare team about possible adjustments.
  • Stay connected with friends and family – it is easy to feel isolated, but maintaining social connections is vital. Let others know how they can support you.
  • Find a community – connecting with other parents of children with diabetes can be a great source of comfort and practical advice. Local support groups and online communities provide an opportunity to share experiences and learn from others in similar situations.

Balancing Family Life

Diabetes does not just impact your child; it affects the whole family. It is important to maintain strong relationships with your partner and other children while navigating the demands of diabetes management.

If You Have a Partner

Caring for a child with diabetes can put strain on relationships, so it is important to support each other. Everyone copes differently; some may focus on the medical aspects, while others may struggle with the emotional impact. Open communication and teamwork will help ease the pressure.

If You Have Other Children

A diagnosis affects every member of the family and is often considered a “whole family diagnosis”. Siblings can sometimes feel left out or take on more responsibility than they should. Including them in small ways, such as cooking meals together, can help them feel involved without overwhelming them. Spending quality time with them without diabetes as the focus helps maintain balance in the family dynamic.

Balancing Work and Diabetes Care

Balancing work and caregiving can be challenging. Many parents worry about how to manage their job alongside their child’s needs. If you are struggling, talk to your employer about flexible working arrangements or time off when necessary.

Encouraging Your Child’s Independence

As your child grows, it is important that they are supported and equipped to take on more responsibility for their diabetes care. This can be a difficult transition for both parent and child. Supporting their independence while ensuring they feel safe and supported is key. Schools have a duty of care to provide appropriate medical support, and we have resources available to help you work with your child’s school to ensure they get the care they need.
